Shillong, Aug 11: The state government’s Teaching and Learning Practices Survey (TLPS) 2025 report was presented at an Evidence Convening held at the Asian Confluence Centre in Shillong.
Richa Kulkarni, Director at DSEL and SPD, highlighted the importance the state is placing on foundational literacy and numeracy.
“So far, the pedagogical approach we have followed has been a fairly conventional one, but over the last few years, a lot of thought and deliberation has gone into how teaching practices can be best designed to help students, given the specific circumstances and challenges they face, perform better,” she said.
She commended the in-depth study conducted over three to four months in Samanda Block, noting that the findings would help the department understand what is working well and what needs improvement.
“I hope the understanding we take from this limited geographical study can slowly be scaled up to other areas of the state, and that in the days to come, we can take this partnership forward,” she added.
She invited all department officials present to engage closely with the study’s findings and contribute suggestions as the programme moves forward.
The event was anchored by the Language and Learning Foundation, supported by Tata Trusts, and implemented in Meghalaya in partnership with Madhi Foundation, Smart Village Movement and Educational Initiatives.
During the round table discussion on effective classroom practices, Sandra M. Nongsiej, Nodal Officer – FLN, DERT emphasised the importance of relating classroom teaching to children’s real-life experiences.
Nongsiej cautioned against teaching content in isolation, disconnected from students’ surroundings.
“It should be from within the society, from within the environment. As children grow, exposure grows too but not at the foundational stage. We should not expose young children to unknown things,” she added.
