Shillong, Oct 11: The suspect, who allegedly raped and murdered a minor in Ri Bhoi, was arrested.
RI Bhoi Special Superintendent of Police Vivekanand Singh Rathore said the accused is Iainehskhem Kharsati (22), son of Late Rinosha Kharsati, a resident of Kalapangti village, Mawlasnai under Umiam police station.
The accused admitted that he first sexually assaulted the child and then murdered her.
“Investigation is underway, and we will charge sheet the case within 14 days after completing all legal formalities. We will also ensure fast fast-track trial so that he gets convicted within the next 3-4 months.
The accused will also be listed in the National Database on Sexual Offenders (NDSO). We express our condolences and pray that God gives courage to the family to stay strong in these tough times. May the child rest in peace”, the police said.
When asked, police said the accused is a distant cousin of the victim.
“Police are probing the motive of the crime and where the accused was hiding after committing the crime”, the SP said.
