Tagore admirers celebrate 103rd anniversary of poet’s visit to city

Shillong, Oct 11: Tagore admirers of Shillong on Tuesday afternoon celebrated 103rd anniversary of his first visit to Shillong  at Brookside.

Nobel laureate  Rabindranath Tagore visited and stayed at “Brookside bungalow” at Rilbong for  three weeks. The anniversary lamp was lit by Subhasis Guga from Pune. Tagore admirers from different parts of Shillong sang the song ‘Akash Bhara Surya Tara’ in front of the statue of Tagore.

Organiser Malabika Bisharad thanked the state government for starting the renovation of brookside bungalow/art gallery.

Whole bungalow should be renovated and Tagore’s wooden bed which he used in October 1919 should be placed in the eastern room, she said, adding that the eastern room is being used as the office chamber of the Director of ICCR Shillong since 2008 – 2009. “We hope the government of Meghalaya will declare Brookside as a heritage site”, she said.
