Tarun Bhartiya no more

Shillong, Jan 25: Film maker and social activist Tarun Bhartiya (54) passed away here on Saturday morning.

He is survived by his wife Angela Rangad,  daughter and two sons.

According to his friends, Tarun, who suffered a heart attack this morning, passed away at Woodland Hospital.

As a writer and photographer, Tarun exposed the region’s intricacies to the world.

While he wrote poetry in Hindi, his documentaries depicted radical issues concerning humanity and environment.

His black and white photographs of the region especially Meghalaya were exhibited in many parts of the country.

Many award -winning films were edited by Tarun, who himself was a national award winner for editing the non-fiction film ‘In Camera , Diaries of a documentary cameraman” in 2009 directed by Ranjan Palit.

In 2015 ,he returned the Rajat Kamal to President Pranab Mukherjee protesting against the dark times the country was going through.

As founder member of alt-space, Tarun created avenue for free flow of independent  ideas besides engaging in cultural and political discussions.

His website raiot is a mirror on the society, culture and tradition.

Tarun was a consultant on the British Library Endangered Archives Project and research consultant to The Northeast India Audio Visual Archive in Shillong.

Recently, he took initiative along with other prominent personalities in forming Shillong Humanists, a space for critical thinking.

The second meeting of the group was scheduled on January 26.
