East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem told reporters that an 18-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl were in a scooty when they were struck.

“The victims were rushed to Civil Hospital but were declared brought dead. One is from Mawpun and the other is from Pynthor,” Syiem said.

The deceased were identified as Benjamin Shabong, 18, and Fabela Grace, 17.

Police said they responded within 5 minutes after being alerted.

“I got the information first and alerted Pasteur and Sardar Traffic. They reached the spot within 5 minutes,” the SP said.

A case has been registered under unnatural death.

“We are working to identify the vehicle that was involved. Once identified, we will arrest the driver,” Syiem said.

Police will also rely on the post-mortem report to check for factors like alcohol consumption and alertness at the time of the accident. Traffic police will conduct a parallel probe to fix responsibility.

“From the FIR, it is clear the driver should have stopped and surrendered. Since he fled, it shows fault on his part”, he said.

Case of Mylliem

A man who went missing about two weeks ago was found dead in Mylliem on Monday, police said.

Syiem said the body was that of M Kurkalang and recovered from 12 Mer with assistance from the SRT.

“We have registered a UD case. He had gone out for work and did not return,” Syiem said.

The SP said the family does not suspect any foul play.

“The family members do not suspect anyone and they have asked for post-mortem exemption,” he said.
