Ten billion economy is an aspiration: Niti Aayog
Shillong, Oct 10 : Vice Chairman of Niti Aayog Suman Kumar Bery has observed that the state government’s target for a 10 billion dollar economy is an aspiration.
“As you know the Prime Minister believed that it is only by setting targets that you can galvanize a system so a 10 billion dollar economy is aspirational,” Bery told reporters on Tuesday.
He chaired a high-level meeting of Niti Aayog to discuss the economic growth of Meghalaya which was attended by chief secretary DP Wahlang, additional chief secretary Shakil P Ahammed and senior officials of the planning department.
According to Bery, the government’s target has stimulated a great deal of analysis.
“Aat the end of the day, it is really engagement of the population, investment…so it is an aspirational target but it drives a lot of other activities and it imposes consistency on an overall development programme, so I think that it is not whether you will get there it is whether it helps you prepare a roadmap and I believe it has and it does.”
To a question, the Niti Aayog vice chairman said, “I would much rather answer the question where is Meghalaya doing well and why is it doing well and I think it is really striking what is being achieved in the areas of education, water, those are the achievements of Meghalaya but they are not complacent about and as chief secretary has said there is a large pipeline of additional projects that is ready to go if financing can be made available.”
