Tension in Maikhuli over uprooting Assam electric poles

Development after CMs meet in Guwahati on Aug 16

Shillong, Aug 18: Villagers of Maikhuli in Meghalaya -Assam border uprooted two electric poles erected by Assam in the wee hours on Monday.

The polls were installed by Assam Power Distribution Company Limited last week.

A senior police officer said the situation is ‘a bit tense but under control’.

The deputy commissioners and magistrates are discussing the matter, he said.

“The Ri Bhoi SP talked to DCP Guwahati, and the police teams from both states are deployed to avoid any law & order problem. We are keeping a watch”, the officer added.

Curiously, the development comes after the meeting of both the Assam and the Meghalaya Chief Ministers- Himanta Biswa Sarma and Conrad Sangma- on August 16 to secure peace in the border.
