Shillong, Jan 30: Three Common University Entrance Test (CUET) centres will be set up in Meghalaya.
Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma told reporters that day before yesterday he had talked to DG of National Testing Agency (NTA), New Delhi who informed him that for the post graduate course, three CUET centres will be set up for Meghalaya – one for Tura and two in Shillong.”
“However, based on the number of students’ enrolment, they may open up more centres in the state,” he said.
There was repeated allegation by the Voice of the People Party (VPP) that the state government is doing nothing to resolve the issue faced by students appearing for the CUET examination.
Conrad had asked the VPP to come and meet him so that he can brief them on the status of the matter. “Maybe this is idea some politicians used to adopt. Suppose if something is going to happen, they should to do just to take credit,” he said.
The education minister expressed concern over the poor performance of students from Meghalaya in the CUET as well as other examinations.
“I have been told by the VC of NEHU that lots of seats are vacant as last year, lots of seats are vacant in NEHU for not having qualified for the CUET examination. I want to request everybody, my young students, to prepare for such an entrance examination,” he said.
He said, “The reason is we are not prepared well because our students take it very lightly but we have the potential. If we take it very seriously it is very easy to crack and it is very much possible.”
Conrad said if needed, the government may decide to come up with coaching centres but at present, the existing institutions have enough potential to prepare students for such examinations.
NEHUTA plea
NEHUTA president Prof Lakhon Kam had sought the intervention of the education minister Rakkam A Sangma on the implementation of CUET for admission in UG courses in colleges affiliated to NEHU hu
In an open letter to Sangma, Prof Kma said since, education is a subject of the Concurrent list, the State government should have a say on how to go about it since in a few months’ time, the process of seeking admission to the UG courses will begin.
