KSU President Raymond Kharjana, Vice President Pynkmenlang Sanmiet and General Secretary Reuben Najiar were taken to Sadar Police Station and arrested.
East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem confirmed the development.
The three have been booked under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, including charges related to damage to public property, assault and violation of law.
Earlier, the KSU leaders spoke to media persons expressing regret over the violence and alleged that the miscreants were behind it to sabotage the agitation.
The rally led to stone pelting, vandalism of 31 vehicles including those from outside the state, the burning of a government vehicle, and assaults on pedestrians at Fire brigade, Nongmensong, Polo, Barik and Mawlai.
Local MLA AL Hek’s vehicle was alao vandalised.
Speaking to reporters, Syiem said the protest that was granted prior permission turned violent across several parts of the city.
“31 vehicles were vandalized, people walking on the streets were beaten up without any reason, and a bus ferrying children was also affected during the protest. One vehicle was set ablaze,” Syiem said.
He said police had approved the rally after receiving an undertaking from organizers that it would remain peaceful.
“We did not expect this to happen because they were granted permission and had given an undertaking. It is sad that this has affected the peace and tranquility in the city,” he added.
The SP said the attacks have left residents anxious and fearful.
“Till now, people are still calling to enquire if it is safe to move out or not. Citizens are frightened,” Syiem said.
He assured strict action against those involved.
“This is a total violation of the law of the land. We will take necessary action on this matter,” he added.
