Shillong, Apr 23: Police arrested three youths from Assam for allegedly raping two minor girls and assaulting two boys in a paddy field (in picture) during the annual Chenga Benga Mela at Gandhipara near Garobadha in South West Garo Hills on April 16.
Police on Tuesday confirmed the arrest of the trio from the South Salmara district of Assam and said while the two accused were arrested from Meghalaya border on Monday, the third accused was arrested while he was trying to flee in a bus bound for Meghalaya from Assam on Tuesday evening.
“He is on a transit and we are bringing him to Meghalaya”, a police official said.
He added that more arrests will be made.
The court granted five days for the police to interrogate the two accused while the third person, who is on transit, will be produced before the court on Wednesday, the police said.
