Toddler’s murder in Nongrah: A tomorrow that never came

Editor,

Mondays have always been gloomy, but today it hits differently. Shillong woke up to the heart-wrenching news of a child’s life that was cut short before she even got the chance to live it. Her innocence was stolen even before it began.

Imagine being just four years old, waking up on a Sunday with nothing but joy in her heart. For her, it must have been a day filled with little dreams, thinking of the games she’ll play and the toys waiting for her. But those dreams will never be lived now. By Monday morning, instead of laughter, her silence told a story too cruel. Her tiny body was found lifeless near her home.

Is this what our state is coming to now? Crime rates in the state are through the roof, so that even the life of a four-year-old cannot be spared. Children are being drugged, and school students are being targeted. The list of crimes gets longer each day, and we cannot keep up with it anymore. Are the lives of the future leaders of our state safe, considering the current scenario? Questions will be there, but who is answerable?

We cannot afford to be silent anymore.

We should all stand united and demand justice. If we look away now, we will have failed not only this child but every child in Meghalaya. We grieve not only for her, but for the world she will never see, the dreams she will never pursue and the happiness her family will never experience again.

Yours etc,.
