Too late a date for polls, says state BJP chief

Shillong, Jan 18: For the state BJP chief Ernest Mawrie, the election date is too late as the party had expected polls to be held by February 20.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has fixed the poll date on February 27.

Mawrie, who is back from the national executive committee meeting of the party in New Delhi, said the party expected the polls to be held one week early.

Other political parties in the state have welcomed the date.

When asked about the declaration of candidates, Mawrie said that a comparative study of the candidates will be made before the state election committee meets to decide.

“We have nearly 50 candidates and we are looking at fielding candidates in all the 60 seats”, Mawrie added

On the national executive committee meeting, Mawrie said that a report on the election scenario in Meghalaya was presented in the meeting.
