Total curfew begins, DC issues order for compliance  

 Covid casualty count 24, new cases 872

Shillong, May 19: The total lockdown imposed by the East Khasi Hills district administration began from 8 pm on Wednesday. The lockdown will continue till May 31.

The day’s Covid casualty count is 24 and the new positives cases are 872.  The total active cases stood at 5769 and East Khasi Hills alone has 3365 cases followed by Ri Bhoi with 689. The total recoveries are 411. The break-up of cases is East Khasi Hills (17) East Garo Hills (1), Ri Bhoi (1),West Jaintia Hills (4) and East Jaintia Hills (1)

Over charging    

Earlier during the day, the shoppers thronged essential shops to store essentials.

Overcharging was  also reported in several areas as the vendors took advantage of the situation. The price of eggs, fish and meat were hiked and the consumers did not have any choice and they did not even question the arbitrary behaviour of the vendors.

The curfew order issued by East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner said that inter-district movement of persons is not permitted. “No person is to step out without valid reasons. Vehicles plying without passes will be liable for strict penalties. Any one in defiance of orders is liable for arrest”, the order said.

Exemptions

The DC also cancelled the in-situ constructions permitted earlier. The exemptions are health services including vaccination and persons moving for vaccination should be able to produce proof of COWIN registration and slot booking.

Other exemptions are medicines and pharmaceuticals, movement of essential goods, movement for medical emergencies, persons travelling on essential government duty, medical teams and officials on Covid duty, police, security and armed forces, civil defence and home guards, fire and emergency services, electricity, water supply, municipal services, public distribution system,  information and public relations, telecommunication services,  print & electronic Media,  NARI/ 1917iTEAMS,  petrol pumps, LPG distributors, central and state government offices as notified by home (political) department, State Bank of India, main branch and Laitumkhrah branch and home delivery services only for food/food products, dry ration, meat, vegetables and toiletries will be regulated by a separate order.

All passes issued earlier for home delivery were valid only till May 19.  Funeral gatherings should be restricted to 10 persons only, with prior permission. All passes for activities not permitted have been revoked.
