Shillong,Oct 8 : A total of 13 candidates have filed their nominations for the bypolls in three Assembly constituencies.
The last day for filing papers was on Friday.
The election will be held on October 30.
“Altogether 13 candidates have filed nominations for the three constituencies,” chief electoral officer Frederick Roy Kharkongor said.
The filing of nomination papers started on October 1.
The scrutiny of papers will be held on October 11 while the last date for withdrawal of candidatures is on October 13.
The byelections were necessitated after the deaths of two Congress legislators – David A Nongrum from Mawryngkneng constituency and Azad Zaman from Rajabala constituency – and Independent legislator from Mawphlang SK Sunn.
Out of 13, five candidates each will be contesting from Mawryngkneng and Rajabala constituencies and 3 from Mawphlang constituency.
In Mawryngkneng, KHADC chairman and Sohryngkham MDC Pyniaid Sing Syiem from the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) will be contesting against the opposition Congress candidate Highlander Kharmalki and three others including KHNAM candidate Esron Marwein and two Independents- Arbiangkam Kharsohmat and Norbert Marboh.
Sunn’s son Eugeneson Lyngdoh, a football star who decided to contest on a UDP ticket from Mawphlang , is pitched against two politicians former MLA Kennedy C Khyriem of the Congress and four-time MDC Lamphrang Blah of the NPP.
In Rajabala constituency, Zaman’s wife Hashina Yasmin Mondal will contest to retain the Congress seat against former legislator and current MDC of Batabari Ashahel D Shira from UDP and three others – MD Abdus Saleh from NPP, Kingston B Marak (BJP) and Carla R Sangma (Independent).: A total of 13 candidates have filed their nominations for the bypolls in three Assembly constituencies.
