Trade unions fight for workers’ rights

Shillong, Feb 12: The Meghalaya Joint Council of Trade Unions & Associations on Thursday protested for workers’ rights near the Shillong civil hospital on Thursday.

The demonstration was part of a nationwide strike sponsored by the Central Trade Unions and Sectoral Federations/Associations against the government’s labour, farm, and economic policies.

The strike, backed by over 10 central trade unions and several farmers’ organisations, aimed at disrupting public services, including banking, transport, and government offices.

Many groups, including bank employees, BSNL employees, and postal workers also participated.

The protesters chanted slogans opposing the government’s policies.

General secretary Edward Lynshing said that the unions are demanding the repeal of the four labour codes, which they claim will weaken workers’ rights, reduce job security, and increase working hours.

They are also seeking the withdrawal of the Draft Seed Bill, Electricity Amendment Bill, and the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Act.

Amarjeet Kaur, General Secretary of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), said not less than 30 crore workers participated in the strike.

The strike is affecting over 600 districts.

The government’s policies have been criticized for favouring corporate interests over workers’ rights and welfare.

The strike has received support from farmers’ organizations, students, and youth groups, who are concerned about the government’s policies on agriculture, education, and employment.
