Shillong, Nov 5: Four people, including Mosklander Marngar, the president of the truckers’ body, were arrested in connection with the standoff between the members of the truckers’ association and those who transport cement & boulders.
In a statement, the East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said around 12.40 am last night, while police were escorting cement and clinker trucks from Puriang, they were obstructed by about 200 people, mostly Meghalaya Commercial Truck Owners and Drivers Association (MCTODA) members at Mawryngkneng junction. The magistrate on duty had already appealed to the crowd not to obstruct the movement of the trucks, but they did not relent; hence police had to resort to a lathi charge to disperse the violent mob. In the mayhem, one handyman from one truck was abducted by the mob. One truck driver also received injuries due to assault by the crowd.
MCTODA is demanding a similar transportation rate of cement and clinker for both Meghalaya and outside the state, as the rate is cheaper in Assam.
Regarding the incident, the SP said, “We have alerted both Ri Bhoi and West Jaintia Hills to conduct vehicle checking and to escort the trucks.
