The Congress MP is also pursuing  expansion of the Baljek airport to accommodate larger aircraft.

The airport is set to operate 20-seater aircraft under the UDAN scheme, but Saleng said it has the potential to handle bigger planes with some renovation and expansion.

“I have already written a letter to the Prime Minister and the minister concerned ot expand it from 20-seater to 75-seater aircraft so that it will do justice to the people of the state,” the MP said.

GHADC issue

Saleng has also praised the employees of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) for keeping the Sixth Schedule institution alive through their dedication and sacrifice by continuing to work despite not receiving salaries for 43 months.

“I would like to praise  the employees who are working very hard to keep the institution alive. It is because of them our Sixth Schedule is still alive. Otherwise if these employees walk out what will happen to the Sixth Schedule institution that was gifted and given during the time of Indira Gandhi,” Saleng told reporters on Monday.

Illegal migrants

Saleng has also taken up with the Centre the issue of Rohingya and militants regrouping in Meghalaya.

“Just a few days back we had the home affairs consultative meeting where I have apprised the union home minister Amit Shah regarding the issue of Rohingya entering the state of Meghalaya as well as militants regrouping in the state,” Sangma told reporters on Monday.

“When we talk about Rohingya, Arakan Army might have entered the state of Meghalaya you don’t know,”he added.
