Two held with drugs in East Jaintia Hills

Shillong, June 15: Two persons were arrested for peddling drugs in East Jaintia Hills, on Thursday.

Initially, a 41-year-old man from Manipur was arrested along with heroin.

Shokhothang Touthang was arrested at Nongsning by the ANTF team and Khliehriat police during a naka checking at BMS fuel station around 5 pm, district SP Jagpal Singh said.

26 soap cases containing heroin weighing 278.03gm were also seized from his possession, he said.

Touthang was proceeding from Aizawl towards Shillong.

Around 6:15 pm, while naka was being conducted near BMS Fuel station Nongsning, a vehicle( Mahindra Scorpio) driven by  Sujit Paul from Karimganj tried to evade the naka and he was detained. During preliminary questioning, he revealed that he was carrying a consignment of illegal contraband in the vehicle which is meant to be delivered to Shillong. Accordingly search of the vehicle was conducted and 33 soap boxes containing yellowish orange powder were found concealed in the dicky of the vehicle. Preliminary test gave a positive result for heroin and the total net weight was found to be 353.34 gm.

The seizure includes 353.34 gm heroin, two mobile phones, Rs 4,700 and Mahindra Scorpio.

A case has been registered at the Khliehriat police station and investigation is on to reveal the backward and forward linkages.
