Two killed in Ichamati after violence

Shillong, Mar 27: Two persons were killed in Ichamati under Shella constituency, East Khasi Hills after a pressure group held a meeting in the area on Wednesday evening.

East Khasi Hills SP Rituraj Ravi said the bodies of Esan Sing and Sujit Dutta were found at Ichamati and Dalda respectively. Inquest and post mortem are yet to be done.

“Teams from local police station and additional teams from Shillong are at site”, he added.

When contacted, Shella MLA Balajied Synrem said he has asked the administration to look into the matter.

“The Sub Divisional Officer and the Sub Divisional Police Officer are at the site and I have no details about the incident”, the MLA said.

Earlier, East  Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner SC Sadhu confirmed the death of two persons and added that there were stones near the bodies of the deceased but the details are awaited.

A magistrate is camping in the area, he added.

When asked about the reports that the KSU held a meeting against CAA implementation there prior to the incident, the deputy commissioner said there were some people belonging to the KSU.

The deputy commissioner said that a magisterial inquiry will be ordered to ascertain the cause of the incident.

Reports have emerged that the deceased who are non-indigenous persons were beaten to death.

Police sources said that the incident took place after the anti-CAA rally organised by the KSU along with other pressure groups at Ichamati.

It is possible that some criminal elements have taken advantage of the situation and killed the two persons, who belonged to the non-indigenous communities, the police added.

The leaders of the locality have been asked to organise peace meetings on Thursday.
