Tynsong assures probe into incidental minerals extraction

Shillong, Feb 19: Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma on Thursday asked the state government to probe incidental minerals extraction by a contractor working on National Highway 62.

Raising the matter on Day 4 of the Budget Session 2026-27, Sangma said he had received inputs indicating deviations from the approved alignment, with the contractor allegedly exploiting incidental minerals for construction purposes.

“It seems the contractor is taking advantage — the builders are engaging in this illegality,” he said.

Sangma added that he possesses photographic evidence and would submit it to the department for action. “I request that an inquiry be made and corrective measures be taken,” he told the House.

In response, Deputy Chief Minister and PWD (Roads) Minister Prestone Tynsong assured the House that the government would examine the charge.

“In case of any instance of any company taking undue advantage… we will examine the issue and take action,” he said.
