Shillong, Jan 9: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has assured to address the concerns related to the atrocities against Christian community if voted to power in 2023.
“If given a clear mandate to lead the state, we will definitely address all those concerns,” UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh told reporters on Monday.
On the visit of the President of India to the state, Lyngdoh said, “When she (President) was contesting the elections at that time, I have raised this issue…that there are lots of attacks on the Christian community and that we need to address this issue that henceforth these kinds of issues should not happen and should not take place.”
Regarding the party’s stand on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), he said the issue needs to be deliberated in a very detailed manner and “we feel that it is not appropriate for them to go ahead with it.”
Referring to the letter seeking information on the number of existing churches, instances of religious conversion in Assam, Lyngdoh said, “These kinds of letters need to be addressed in a very positive way and that it should not have any negative kind of things on those churches or on those Christians who are living in that state.”
To a question, the UDP chief said, “Here, we are allying with the NPP and other political parties including the BJP. BJP also happens to be there but it doesn’t mean that if BJP is there we cannot be part of the government but whenever any issue comes up which is against the people of the state we will raise those issues and we will ensure that those points taken up by them cannot be accepted by us the UDP.”
