Umroi airport expansion to cost Rs 600 crore

Shillong, Sept 24: The expansion of Umroi airport will cost Rs 600 crore. 
This will include Rs 100 crore from the state government and Rs 500 crore from Airport Authority of India (AAI).

The AAI has said the expansion of the Shillong Airport’s runway by 571 meter can be achieved within a cost of Rs 100 crore by the state government, excluding other costs that will be borne by the AAI which will be Rs 500 crore. 
The state cabinet will take a decision in this regard.
The court said AAI general manager planning Dr Gursewak Manish has rendered his assistance in explaining the exact requirements.
“In his elaboration, Dr Gursewak Manish has explained that by the LiDAR survey, comprehensive survey of the entire Airport including all the requirements had been conducted. With regard to the earth cutting as required for expansion of the runway by 571 meters, it has been stated that if the proposal is accepted and passed by the state government and by the Regulatory Authority that is the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA ), the same can be achieved within  Rs 100 crore by the state government, excluding other costs that will be borne by the AAI in the improvement which will be to the tune of Rs 500 crore,” the court said.
The Advocate General submitted that the proposal that has been put forward before the court will be placed before the cabinet and a decision on the proposal will likely be given with in a week.
The court said that Dr N. Mozika, DGSI has submitted that once an in-principle approval has been obtained from the state government, then the AAI will go ahead with completing other requirements by submitting the proposal before the DGCA for other clearances.

The matter will be heard on October 1 for further orders and to await the decision of the cabinet on the re-worked proposal,” the court said.
Traffic congestion & obstruction 
In another case, the court directed the state to take immediate steps to address the problem of traffic congestion, removal of obstructions to the entrances of public health institutions and others.
While hearing a PIL, the court said it has taken serious note of the situation that is continuing
unabated.
“And to avoid any further orders whereby drastic action be taken against the officials concerned, it is expected that the district
authorities take immediate steps on the issues flagged and noted by this court especially with regard to obstruction to the movement of traffic, the Right Of Way that should be maintained by the PWD (Roads) in public roads which shall also include removal of obstructions to the entrances of public health institutions which pose hazards to road safety,” it said.
The court said R Colney, GA on behalf of the State respondents has not brought out anything new, as to what measures have been taken , but has repeated the submissions that have been made on earlier occasions with regard to the operationalization of the CCTV cameras , and has further submitted that it would require three more months to make the same functional.

This court noted  that with regard to the order that has been
issued by the Superintendent of Police , East Khasi Hills , Shillong as far back as 1 4.02.2024 , on measures that are to be implemented , which apparently had been issued pursuant to the order dated 07.02.2024 by this court, the same it appears , has not been implemented or acted upon in any manner.
“It is expected that measures should also be taken immediately in terms of the order dated 14.02.2024 , issued by the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, Shillong,”  the order said.
