Union minister not aware of demand of Seng Khasi, Niamtre for minority status

Shillong,June 21: Th Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs John Barla on Tuesday said he is not aware of the demand of Seng Khasi and Niamtre for minority status in the state.

The union minister also said the cabinet will take a decision on the issue of minority status to Hindus who are a minority in some states as a case in this regard is pending.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Barla said If there is a demand from the Seng Khasi and Niamtre, the Centre will pursue the matter

Earlier in May this year, the member of National Commission for Minorities, Rinchen Lhamo had told reporters that if representations are submitted ,the minority status to Seng Khasi, Niamtre and Songsarek will be examined.

Currently, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Budhists, Parsis, and Jains are in the list of minorities in the country.

On the issue of majority communities like Hindus becoming minorities in Meghalaya and the demand for minority status by them, she had said the matter is pending in the court.
