United Naga Council to impose ‘trade embargo’ from Sep 8

Senapati (Manipur), Sep 3 (NNN): The United Naga Council (UNC) on Wednesday announced the imposition of what it called a “trade embargo in Naga areas” under its jurisdiction from midnight of September 8, until further notification on the issues of Free Movement Regime (FMR) and border fencing.
The move comes after talks between UNC-led Naga organisations and the Cengre fell through on August 26.
“On the impending issue of unilateral abrogation of FMR and imposed border fencing construction amidst Naga homeland, the Naga people have placed their sentiments and position loud and clear on record to the Government of India through official memorandum to the authorities followed by series of agitations, demonstrations, public rallies and number of memoranda and press statements to the government in a democratic approach with all civility, since January 19, 2024 till date”, said the UNC.
“Yet, the indifferent attitude of the government demands a stringent agitation to register our rigid stance against the scrapping of FMR and imposed border fencing construction for defending our homeland and identity and the inherent rights over our land,” it added.
It should be mentioned that the 11-member Naga team held talks with an eight-member central team on August 26, but it ended in a deadlock.
According to the UNC leaders, they had told the Government of India representatives that if the dialogue was to continue, the ongoing border fencing should be on hold.

“But the Government of India representatives were adamant that the construction works of the border fencing cannot be halted”, a UNC leader said. “As such is the stand of the Government of India, how can the talk be continued?” he added.
