In a statement issued on Wednesday (Oct 7), the VPP president Ardent Basaiawmoit said the government should appoint a qualified, senior local advocate from Meghalaya as the next Advocate General.

Earlier, the lawyers took out a rally and  shouted slogans against Chief Minister Conrad Sangmaado and Kumar.

According to the lawyers, the chief minister has not ensured granting leave to the AG as he has been working despite the wish of the bar associations.

They are also aggrieved that the reply to the RTI queries on expenditure incurred by the AG was not given citing clause 8 of  the RTI act.

The Secretary General of the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association  Kishore Gautam said the RTI application seeking expenditure details was rejected on the 30th day citing Section 8.
“We had filed an RTI to know how much public funds are being spent for the office of the Advocate General and the outstation lawyers. On the 30th day, they replied saying they cannot give the information under Section 8, which is absolutely not legally tenable,” Gautam said.
“We have filed an appeal. It is clear the government is trying to shield information. It does not want the amount spent on the AG and his office to come out in public, because then people will understand why we are agitating,” he said.
