VPP & HYC ask govt to release salary of contractual nurses

Shillong, Jan 12: VPP and HYC have asked the state government to address the plight of contractual nurses.

In separate statements issued on Monday, the VPP and the HYC expressed concern over the pending issue.

The VPP wanted the MDA government to promptly disburse the outstanding salaries of 288 contractual staff nurses for November and December.

“The party demands that the government should disburse the salary of these contractual nurses immediately,” VPP Spokesperson B Myrboh said in a statement issued on Monday.

According to him, the non-release of their salary has put their lives and families in great hardships. Besides celebrating Christmas and New Year penniless, the employees are faced with difficulty to meet the expenditure related to education of their children.

“The government should not forget that these nurses have to feed themselves and their families. It is highly disappointing and condemnable that the staff who serve other fellow citizens are left high and dry by the government,” Myrboh added.

The VPP has urged the state government to prioritize the payment of salaries, emphasizing the importance of committing to the basics of governance.

“It is in this context that the VPP has always been advising the state government to avoid wasteful expenditure but commit to the basics of governance,” Myrboh said.

The HYC condemned  government’s treatment of contractual staff nurses.

They have not received salaries since October 2025 and the nurses are being forced to continue working without  written extension of service, the HYC said.

“This is nothing short of state-sponsored exploitation,” said Roy Kupar Synrem, President of HYC in a statement issued on Monday.

According to HYC,  making nurses work without pay and formal service orders violates labour norms, service rules, and basic human dignity.

“Verbal assurances and informal instructions cannot replace written orders or justify months of unpaid labour,” Synrem said.

The council demands immediate disbursement of pending salaries, written extension orders for affected nurses, and strict action against responsible officials.

“We therefore demand, with no ambiguity to Immediately disburse all pending salaries from October 2025, with arrears cleared in full; Immediate issuance of written extension orders for all affected contractual nurses and fixing of responsibility and strict action against officials responsible for this deliberate neglect,” Synrem said while emphasizing “healthcare workers are not bonded labour. Their rights cannot be trampled upon.”
