Water everywhere but it flows to Bangladesh & Assam leaving Meghalaya dry

Shillong, March 3: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Monday expressed concern over waste of rain water in the state though it gets maximum rainfall.

In reply to a supplementary question by Adelbert Nongrum (VPP), Conrad said in the Assembly that though the state receives about 63 billion cubic litres of water annually, 30 billion cubic litres flow to Bangladesh and the equal quantity of water flows to Assam.

“We have Rs 4,000 crore worth of projects but our concern lies in the overall storage and management of this vast volume of water, as well as its distribution. This is a large-scale issue,” he said.

Water management is a continuous process that cannot be addressed in just one or two years, the chief minister added.

He said water connections to households increased from 5,000 in 2018 to 5 lakh currently.
