Weekend Fight Club aims to bridge MMA tourney gap in state
Happy Red Rooster organises first edition on September 7
Shillong, Sep 10: Happy Red Rooster, a city-based mixed martial arts (MMA) institute, has introduced Weekend Fight Club (WFC), the first edition of which took place on September 7.
Five teams met in the cage in various categories. There were seven men’s match-ups and a women’s fight.
The event is an endeavour to create a platform for combat athletes in Meghalaya. “There are a huge number of combat athletes hungry to compete. Yet, there are no tournaments to speak of. WFC is our attempt to fill this gap,” said coach Reuben Lulam.
The first objective of WFC is to have athletes gain as much competition experience as possible at local and regional levels.
“The key idea here is to provide a goal to work towards instead of endlessly training with nothing to look forward to. Having a goal to work towards, we hope, will help them improve their skill and keep them sharp and competition-ready,” Lulam said.
“We have several athletes who compete at the national level and a few National Champions. WFC hopes to help increase this number and provide a breeding ground for athletes to turn professional,” he added.
The second objective is to build WFC as a platform for the national standing. This is a long-term goal for HRR and it wants to start small, working towards elevating the platform.
The first edition of WFC was a huge success and it was “both surprising and fulfilling to see how drastically the level of the sport has grown in the state”. Each fight was technical, measured yet intense and highly exciting.
HRR is hoping to host WFC every month.
