When HC took note of collapse of part of PA Sangma stadium in 2023
Shillong, June 2: High Court of Meghalaya had taken up a PIL when part of PA Sangma stadium collapsed for the first time in 2023.
While disposing of a PIL moved by Amit R. Marak, the court had on August 17 last year said the previous orders recorded the undertaking given by the contractor to repair and reconstruct the collapsed portion without any additional cost to the state.
“From all reports, the reconstruction of the collapsed portion has commenced and the collapsed portion would be restored, according to the contractor, within the next month or so. The contractor says that
instead of the retaining wall that was in position, the state requires a
slight modification and an extension of the stadium. Be that as it may”, the court had said.
The concern of the petitioner was the access along the road next to the collapsed portion of the stadium. The state had filed a short report through the Chief Engineer, State Sports Council Meghalaya that the debris was cleared and the existing road has been made
somewhat navigable. However, in view of the proposed construction, the state found out an alternative route and work was in
progress. “Since the old road is somewhat navigable and the state has indicated that an alternative route would be prepared without any undue delay, nothing remains of this matter. It is hoped that the alternative
route is in place within two months from date. The state will also ensure that residents and others who need to use the existing road are
provided sufficient space for vehicles to navigate through the same”, the court had said.
