Shillong, June 22: As many as 364 children in Meghalaya were infected by HIV in Meghalaya which is alarming, according to Priyank Kanoongo, chairperson, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights.
Kanoongo chaired a meeting with 16 departments of the state government on Saturday to address the issues affecting the children.
Briefing journalists after the meeting, Kanoongo said that the alarming situation in Meghalaya is regarding children infected by HIV.
Kanoongo asked the department concerned to examine whether sponsorship can be provided to the HIV affected 364 children under section 45 of Juvenile Justice Act so that they can avail monetary assistance from the government.
As 8,000 adults are also HIV positive, the commission wanted the department to examine the families and children affected so that they can also get financial assistance.
