State takes steps to prevent skin disease in cattle

Shillong, May 30: The state government has taken steps to prevent the spread of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) among cattle.

Based on the test result of samples sent on April 28 regarding the confirmation of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in Meghalaya on May 12 by the National Institute of High Security Animal Disease (NIHSAD) Bhopal and with the view to prevent and control the scheduled disease, the state government has declared the villages of Sumer, Mawlyngkhung, Umpyrdong-Umden, Umkon-Umden, Saiden-Nongpoh and Jyntru-Nongpoh under Umsning C&RD Block in Ri-Bhoi and Rangthong under Mawkyrwat C&RD Block in South West Khasi Hills District as ‘infected villages’ of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD)’ in cattle.

This was informed by the secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, AH & Veterinary Department.

“We are giving vaccines to healthy animals to prevent spread in areas affected by lumpy skin disease and for infected animals we are giving antibiotics to reduce severity , said the secretary Manjunatha C.

He said for infected animals , the department is giving antibiotics to reduce severity.

The official said that the spread is from mosquitoes and flies and the farmers should use mosquito-fly repellent to prevent the spread.

He said some deaths were reported from a few areas in East Khasi Hills and hence the doctors will be sent on Wednesday.
