Japan agency helps state on disaster management

Shillong, July 24: Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) team from Japan on Tuesday visited the State Emergency Operation Centre in Shillong.

The JICA team was accompanied by National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), New Delhi. The visit was part of the country-focused training program aimed at “Enhancing Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience Building Capacities of North Eastern States of India.”

The delegation was received by M. War Nongbri, Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Revenue & Disaster Management Department, and Executive Director SDMA, Meghalaya along with officials.

The program engaged in discussions focused on sharing best practices, technological innovations, and strategic frameworks that have been successful in Japan’s disaster management efforts. The team also visited sites at Wahumkhrah, Riatsamthiah area, Nongmynsong area, and Rngain, Pynursla, East Khasi Hills District, accompanied by DDMA and relevant departments.

The visit marks step in the ongoing efforts to enhance the disaster preparedness and response mechanisms of Meghalaya and other Northeastern states. By leveraging Japan’s extensive experience and expertise in disaster management, the state aims to build more resilient communities and reduce the impact of natural disasters.
