Home remedies to prevent hair split ends

Split ends in hair are common, especially when there is so much hair damage due to chemical treatments like dyeing, colouring, straightening and bleaching.

Split ends occur when the hair is dry and the cuticle, which is the protective layer, is stripped off from the ends of the hair. Sometimes, the splits may go right up each hair shaft, damaging the hair.

The other causes of split ends can be using wire bristle brushes, wire rollers, excessive heat applications to dry or style the hair and even backcombing the hair. So, avoid using hair dryers and wire brushes. Use a wide-toothed comb. If you use a hair dryer, hold it 10 inches away from the hair. Avoid tying the hair tightly with rubber bands.

One way of preventing split ends is to trim the hair frequently. Then, give your hair proper and regular care. Hot oil therapy twice a week helps.

Some home remedies will help:

Egg yolk, used as a hair mask, nourishes the hair and prevents split ends. Egg yolk also works as a hair conditioner and even strengthens the hair. You can also mix egg yolk with olive oil, coconut oil or almond oil and then apply to the hair. Egg yolk can also be used with lemon juice.

Take ripe papaya pulp (paste) and add 3 tablespoons of curd. Apply to the scalp by parting the hair. Apply on hair, especially the ends. Wash off with water after half an hour.

For a home hair conditioner, take half a cup of milk and add one tablespoon of cream (malai). Beat well to mix. Then apply it to the hair. Wash off well with warm water after 20 minutes.

Take half a cup of moong dal and a tablespoon of methi seeds and grind them into a coarse powder. Mix half a cup of curd and apply to the hair. Use mild shampoo after one hour to wash the hair.

Beer is also a good hair conditioner. It softens the hair and adds body to the hair.

Weekly henna treatments will also help. Add 4 teaspoons each of lemon juice and coffee, 2 raw eggs and enough curd to the henna powder, mixing it into a thick paste. Apply on the hair and wash off after an hour. If you do not wish to use egg, add more curd.

Have a small bowl of sprouts daily and ask your doctor to prescribe vitamin and mineral supplements.
