In reply to a question by Brightstarwell Marbaniang (VPP) Power Minister AT Mondal said on Monday that the revised project cost for upgradation of Mawlai sub-station from 3×20 MVA to 3×50 MVA under NESIDS-OTRI schemes is from Rs 49.8 crore to Rs 79.23 crore.

This was approved by the Ministry of DoNER on January 16, 2025 and the Meghalaya Power Transmission Corporation Limited is implementing the project.

Due to escalation of cost of the project, the central share has been limited to the original approved cost of Rs 49.8 crore and the additional cost of Rs 29.43 crore will have to be borne by the state government, he said.

To a supplementary question raised by Marbaniang, Mondal said, “We will try to see this project come as early as possible as this sub-station is very important to Shillong city”.
The sub station was constructed in 1964 and it had served 60 per cent of consumers.
