Opp Leader hints at drug angle

Shillong, June 5: Opposition Leader Mukul Sangma has asked the state government to take note of the recent murder of tourist from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, who along with his wife went missing while on a honeymoon to Sohra.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Mukul said the couple have chosen Meghalaya as it is the safest tourist destination.

“I condole the unfortunate loss of life of this family…,” Mukul said.

According to him, there is no time to play politics over the incident and it should be a wake up call to the government and the people of the state.

“The government must take cognizance of this. It may not be an act of the member belonging to any militant outfit but it can be because of what is already prevailing in the state of Meghalaya, so wake up, the citizens must wake up, all of us must wake up,” he said.

Mukul also stressed the need to implement the Meghalaya Residents, Safety and Security Act, 2016 and said installation of CCTVs has been mandated by the law.

“However, unfortunately, even police stations are not covered by CCTVs”, he said.

He also expressed concern over the surge in the number of youths who are victims of substance abuse and urged the need to address the issue.”How many worth of drugs have been seized in North East? Where is this money coming? Who is running it? Therefore, the government of the day, not just Meghalaya government but governments of all North East states must come together and find out ways and means and to go after the cartel and break the cartel chain,” he added.
