Court imprisons 3 for 20 years in gang rape case

Shillong, June 19: A local court here convicted three persons and sentenced them to 20 years of imprisonment for their involvement in a gang rape case.
The court of DR Kharbteng, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Judicial) East Khasi Hills in the judgment passed on June 2, convicted and sentenced the three accused persons – Marwello Lawai, Elipsing Lawai and Rakesh Marboh in a case registered with the Mawrynkneng police station in 2022.
The trio were booked under sections 323 (relating to voluntarily causing hurt), 343 (wrongful confinement) and 376D (gang rape), East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said in a statement issued on Thursday.
“The court has sentenced them to simple imprisonment for a term of one year for the offence u/s 323 & 343 IPC and to rigorous imprisonment for 20 years with fine of Rs 1 lakh each for the offence u/s 376D. In default of payment of fine, the accused persons shall undergo simple imprisonment for 2 months,” he said.
Woman police SI KD Sangma presently posted in the Directorate of (Infiltration) investigated the crime.
