
Shillong, Aug 4: Five members of a family, including an over-one-year-old child, were killed when a car in which they were travelling fell into a gorge at Rngain, NH 40, Shillong-Dawki road, due to poor visibility and the absence of a guard wall
The victims have been identified as Ellida Marbaniang (65), wife of Elbiwell Kharbudon, a resident of Lyngkyrdem Laitlyting, Mebanador Marbaniang(28), son of Elbiwell, also a resident of Lyngkyrdem Laitlyting, Aimeki Marbaniang (23), son of Elbiwell, Risbunlang Kurbah (22), wife of Mebanador, a resident of Mawpunrum, East Khasi Hills, and Damebanshngain Kurbah (one year and 4 months), son of Mebanador, also residing at Mawpunrum.
Aimeki was driving the vehicle.
According to the police, on August 3, around 9:02 pm, they received information from a passer-by that a vehicle had fallen into a gorge at Rngain, NH 40, Shillong -Dawki road. It was learnt that around 9 pm, the car proceeding from Laitlyngkot towards Pynursla, went off the road and fell into the gorge at Rngain.
At the time of the accident, the weather was very foggy, and it is suspected that the vehicle went off the road due to poor visibility at a portion that is under construction, the police said. The area did not have a protective guard wall. A search was conducted and found the extensively damaged vehicle( ML05 U 4926) and five bodies. From the address of the recovered ID cards, the families of the deceased were tracked, the police said.
When contacted, the Deputy Chief Minister in charge of PWD and local MLA, Prestone Tynsong, said he was busy in a meeting.
