Many city schools get prizes for show in I-Day celebrations

Shillong, Aug 15: Many city schools won awards during the Independence Day celebrations held at JN Stadium , Polo Grounds in the city on Friday.

Prizes were distributed to the winners of March Past where Loreto Convent School, BSF Girls Hr. Sec. School and St. Joseph Hr. Sec. School won the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively. In the Brass Band, Sacred Heart Boys Hr. Sec. School, St. Margaret Hr. Sec. School and Auxilium Girls Hr. Sec. School won the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively. In the cultural programme, Pine Mount Hr. Sec School, Auxilium Girl Hr. Sec. School, St. Anthony’s Hr. Sec. School won the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively.

Chief Minister,  Conrad K Sangma hoisted the National Flag and took the Rashtriya Salute of the 35 Marching Contingents comprising of the Border Security Force, CRPF, East Khasi Hills Special Operation Team, 1st MLP Bn., 5th IRBN Arunachal Pradesh, NCC Boys & Girls, Meghalaya Bharat Scouts and Guides, Loreto Convent School, Sacred Heart Girls Hr. Police Medal for Meritorious Service to  Billygraham R Marak, Commandant and  Allan Eddie Marbaniang, Asst. Sub Inspector, and Fire Service Medal for Meritorious Service to Rokesh Warjri, Leading Fireman were announced during the day.

Further on the occasion, Badalyne Kharkongor, Divisional Commandant of Home Guards, Shillong Home Guards Division and Naik Parsing Ch Marak, Central Training Institute of Civil Defence & Home Guards were awarded the Meritorious Service Medal from the Civil Defence & Home Guards Department of the State.

On the occasion, certificates were also distributed to the top performing hospitals (both public and private) under East Khasi Hills District for best implementation of MHIS-PMJAY scheme. Top performing PHC was awarded to Dangar PHC, top performing CHC to Mawphlang CHC, top performing Maternal & Child Hospital to Ganesh Das Government Maternal & Child Hospital and top performing private hospital was awarded to Nazareth Hospital.

At Tura: Deputy Chief Minister,  Sniawbhalang Dhar hoisted the National Flag and took the Salute of 25 marching contingents comprising of Tura DEF, 2nd MLP Battalion, Goeragre, NCC Boys and Girls from Tura Government College, Don Bosco College, Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Pechon Memorial Higher Secondary School, and St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School; NCC from Garo Union Higher Secondary School; Scout Troops and Guide Companies from Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, St. Xavier’s Higher Secondary School, St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Christian Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Garo Union Higher Secondary School and the Band Party of the 2nd MLP Battalion, Goeragre at a programme held at Matchakolgre L.P. School Playground, New Tura.

The celebration also featured cultural performances, including traditional dances and songs. A special attraction was a dog show presented by the Border Security Force (BSF), Dobasipara Unit.

During the function, the Chief Guest presented Appreciation Awards to this year’s MBOSE toppers: Esther D. Shira of Sherwood School, Tura; Samridhya Das of Don Bosco College Higher Secondary Section, Tura; and Nev Sharma of Don Bosco College Higher Secondary Section, Tura. ICSE and CBSE toppers honoured included Bakrime Rikande M. Sangma of Nokrek Heights Higher Secondary School, Tura, and Jeremiah Chemikkim M. Sangma of Tura Public School, Tura.

The Chief Guest also felicitated Flemington Nongrum, UDA, for 28 years of service in the Indian Army and for his current role at the Zila Sainik Welfare Office, West Garo Hills, Tura. Other awardees included Bensing Ch. Marak, Medical Record Officer; Jehangir D. Shira, Grade IV, District Medical and Health Office; Deboras R. Marak, RCW, and Amal Kr. Hajong, LDA, District Horticulture Office; Balwan R. Marak, Supervisory Assistant, Establishment Branch, Office of the Deputy Commissioner; and Anne Tensie K. Marak, Assistant Teacher, Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Tura, under the District School Education Officer, West Garo Hills.

In addition, awards in other fields were presented to Aneesh M. Sangma, son of Gautam Barman and Assunta M. Sangma, for achievements in motorsports, and to Linthon M. Momin for pioneering music recording and production in the Garo Hills.

Trophies and certificates were also awarded to the best-performing parade contingents. Don Bosco Higher Secondary School Scout Troop and St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School Guide Company emerged as winners, while St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School Scout Troop and Christian Girls’ Higher Secondary School Guide Company were declared runners-up. Among the NCC contingents, Tura Government College NCC Boys and Don Bosco College NCC Girls won first place, with Don Bosco College NCC Boys and Pechon Memorial Higher Secondary School, Tura, securing the runners-up positions.

As part of the day’s celebrations, a One-Day Buyer and Seller Meet – Mini Bazaar – was organised at DC Park, Tura, featuring over 20 stalls set up by entrepreneurs. Exhibits included handicrafts, handloom products, woodcrafts, jewellery, innovative items from PRIME entrepreneurs, artworks, food and beverages, as well as games, children’s painting competitions, and a music programme presented by Nokpante Productions, MGMP, and local artists.

At Williamnagar: PHE Minister,  Marcuise N Marak hoisted the National Flag and took the Salute of 31 marching contingents comprising of Meghalaya Police, schools and colleges, NCC, Bharat Scouts and Guides at a programme held at Rongrenggre Govt. Higher Secondary School playground.

The other highlights of the celebration include cultural show, sports for children, inter-locality Tug of War competition and an exhibition football match between DC XI and Medical XI.

The day was also celebrated in Songsak and Samanda C&RD Blocks in East Garo Hills.

At Ampati: Deputy Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Shri Timothy D. Shira hoisted the National Flag and took the Salute of 28 marching contingents comprising of Ampati DEF, NCC, and Scouts & Guides

Cultural show and presentation of awards and certificates to meritorious students, employees, health workers and facilities, and children’s sports were some of the highlights of the day’s celebration.

At Resubelpara: Power Minister, Shri A T Mondal hoisted the National Flag and took the Salute of the 29 parade contingents at a programme held at Mini Stadium, Resubelpara.

Other highlights of the celebration include participation of 5 schools in Patriotic songs, dance and Variety Show. Awards to various departments were also given during the celebration.

At Jowai: Revenue & Disaster Management Minister, Shri Kyrmen Shylla hoisted the National Flag and took the Salute of 33 contingents comprising of District Police, Kiang Nangbah Govt College SDSW, NCC Cadets, 61 Meghalaya Girls Battalion JW Government Girls, 42 Meghalaya Battalion JDJW NCC, Jowai, Meghalaya Bharat Scouts & Guides, and 27 schools at a programme held at Jrisalein Playground.

The other highlights of the day include distribution of awards and mementoes, traditional and patriotic song and dances and a final Independence Day Cup under-17 football tournament.

At Khliehriat: Sports and Youth Affairs Minister, Shri Shakliar Warjri hoisted the National Flag and took the Salute of 31 marching contingents comprising of Meghalaya Police, NCC Cadets, Scouts & Guides and students at Holy Family Parish Playground.

The celebration saw the participation of government officials, students and community members, featured an exhibition of India’s rich culture and diversity through cultural performances which was presented by students and SHG members, distribution of awards and distribution of gifts to shelter homes etc.

At Nongstoin: Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dr M Ampareen Lyngdoh hoisted the National Flag and took the Salute of the 27 marching contingents comprising of Meghalaya Police and 26 schools at St. Peter’s Higher Secondary School Playground, Pyndengrei.

Other highlights of the day’s celebration include cultural programmes, distribution of prizes to winners of various competitions, distribution of food packets to orphanages and shelter homes.

At Mawkyrwat: Food Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Minister, Shri Comingone Ymbon hoisted the National Flag and took the Salute of the marching contingents comprising of Meghalaya Police, Meghalaya Bharat Scouts & Guides, NCC and 10 schools at a programme held at Nativity Higher Secondary School playground.

Prizes and Awards were also handed to the winners in different categories. In the March Past, the Modern Academy Higher Secondary School, Rangmaw bagged the 1st Prize followed by Maharam Government Higher Secondary School, Mawkyrwat and Rising Secondary School, Sohkhyllam in the 2nd and 3rd place respectively. Certificates of appreciation were also distributed to all participants of the cultural programme.

Mawthawpdah Primary Health Centre has been awarded as the Top Performing Primary Health Centre in South West Khasi Hills District under Megha Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) & Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AV PM-JAY).

As part of the celebration, the South West Khasi Hills District Swimming Association in collaboration with the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, South West Khasi Hills District also conducted the 7th Annual Swimming Competition 2025 at Phot Mawpon, Mawkyrwat.

At Nongpoh: Tourism Minister, Shri Paul Lyngdoh hoisted the National Flag and took the Salute of the 24 parade contingents comprising of 6th MLP Bn., Umran, Bharat Scouts & Guides, school children and a band party from St Paul’s Hr. Sec School at NSCA Ground, Pahamsyiem.

The day’s celebration include cultural show, patriotic songs and dances performed by school children of different schools, distribution of the Awards of recognition VO, VHC, ASHA, SHGs, and sport persons and distribution of food package to the inmates of Civil Hospital, Leprosy Colony, Children’s Home, Saiden and jail inmates.

At Mairang: Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Minister, Shri A L Hek hoisted the National Flag and took the Salute of the 18 marching contingents comprising of Meghalaya Police, NCC, Scouts and Guides and school students at Dommawlum Playground.

The other highlights of the celebration include patriotic songs, dances performance by school children and presentation of awards, prize distribution, and a football match.

At Baghmara: MLA, Rupert Momin hoisted the National Flag and took the Salute of 24 parade contingents comprising of BSF, Meghalaya Police, Bharat Scouts & Guides and schools at District Sports Office Playground.

To mark the celebration appreciation awards were given to the best performing employees of the District, Best performing PHC’s under District in the implementation of MHIS was awarded to Siju PHC and the best sports persons of the District were also felicitated during the celebration.

Other highlights of the celebration include cricket match between DC XI and SP XI, Football match between DC XI and Teacher’s XI and distribution of food packages to the hospital inmates and Children’s Home Boys & Girls.

At Sohra Civil Sub-Division: MLA, Gavin M Mylliem hoisted the National Flag and took the Salute of 20 parade continents comprising of Meghalaya Police, NCC, college and school students at a programme held at St. John Bosco Boys’ Higher Secondary School, Maraikaphon.

The celebration also featured cultural programs that highlighted India’s rich heritage and diversity. Prizes were distributed to the winners of the various events adding to the excitement of the day.

At Dadenggre Civil Sub-Division: MLA,  Arbinstone B Marak hoisted the National Flag and took the Salute of the 13 marching contingents at a programme held at Dadenggre Playground.

At Amlarem Civil Sub-Division: MLA,  Lahkmen Rymbui hoisted the National Flag took the Salute of 9 contingents comprising of Meghalaya Police and 8 schools at Amlarem Government Lower Primary School Playground.

Other highlights of the day’s celebration include cultural performances and patriotic songs, presentation of awards and prizes by the Sub-Divisional Office (Civil), Amlarem and Independence Cup Football Tournament organised by Amlarem Subdivision Sports Association (ASSA).

At Pynursla Civil Sub-Division: MLA,  Charles Marngar hoisted the National Flag and took the Salute of the 12 marching contingents comprising of Meghalaya Police and school students at Urksew Umkor Pynursla Sport Club Stadium.

At Mawshynrut Civil Sub-Division: MLA,  Remington G Momin hoisted the National Flag and took the Salute of 21 parade contingents comprising of Meghalaya Police and 20 schools at Lynngam Presbyterian Higher Secondary School, Mawthengkut.

The other highlights of the day include cultural performances and the distribution of eatables to patients of CHC Riangdo.

At Raksamgre Civil Sub-Division: MLA,  Limison D Sangma hoisted the National Flag and took the Salute of the 7 marching contingents at a programme held at Matchokgre Playground.

At Ranikor Civil Sub-Division: MLA,  Celestine Lyngdoh hoisted the National Flag and took the Salute of the marching contingents comprising of Meghalaya Police and 9 schools at Nolikata playground.

In the March Past, St. Thomas School, Pamdaba emerged as the winner followed by Indira Gandhi Secondary School and St. Thomas Upper Primary School, Pamdaba in the 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

The other highlights of the celebration were cultural programmes by the schools and Village Organizations (VOs) under Ranikor Civil Sub Division and the distribution of sweets to the children.

At Patharkhmah Civil Sub-Division: MLA, Mayralborn Syiem hoisted the National Flag at Umsaw Patharkhmah ground and took the Salute of 10 parade contingents comprising of Meghalaya Police and school students.

Other events of the day’s celebration include cultural programmes, football and basketball matches.

At Jengjal Civil Sub-Division: MLA,  Pongseng R Marak hoisted the National Flag and took the Salute at Jengjal Playground.

At Dalu Civil Sub-Division: MLA. Brening A Sangma hoisted the National Flag and took the Salute at Dalu Government Higher Secondary School Playground.

At Rongjeng Civil Sub-Division: MLA,  Jim M Sangma hoisted the National Flag and took the Salute of the 8 marching contingents at Rongjeng Govt. UP School playground.

At Chokpot Civil Sub-Division: Sub Divisional Officer (Civil), P R Sangma hoisted the National Flag and took the Salute of the 17 marching contingents comprising of Meghalaya Police and schools at Warima Playground.

Other highlights of the celebration include children’s sports and inter-school Football Final Match.

At Hima Shangpung Laskein C & RD Block, MLA  Santa Mary Shylla hoisted the National Flag and took the Salute of the marching contingents at Hula Playground, Moosyiem, Shangpung.

Other highlights of the Day include Patriotic songs and Cultural dance performed by the students.
