Govt to demolish historical circuit house building in city

Process to start multi-storey building from Nov 15

Shillong, Nov 7: After demolishing heritage Taraghar and making a new state guest house despite a court order to maintain its old form, the state government has targeted another historical building: Circuit House at Laban, linked to history. The building, dating back to the 1920s, is connected to Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the second West Bengal Chief Minister.

A PWD official confirmed the decision to demolish the Circuit House to make another concrete structure.

While some parts of the Circuit House have original structure, it has undergone gradual changes to accommodate officers.

According to some experts, Rabindranath Tagore and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose had visited the house constructed by Dr Roy, who is also linked to providing electricity to the town since 1923.
