State must review its Laban Circuit House decision

Editor,
It has come to the notice of the members of the state’s civil society that the Laban Circuit House, Shillong, a heritage building with a historic legacy, is being demolished for an obvious planned purpose by the Government of Meghalaya. It is quite disheartening and painful to see this legendary house being demolished if at all, and reshaped loosing its iconic heritage value and historic charm as has been highlighted in a recent letter by Malabika Bisharad, a Shillong-based renowned Rabindra researcher and a fearless crusader for preservation of heritage sites in Shillong city like Brookside Bungalow to name one, where Nobel Laureate Tagore stayed during his maiden Shillong visit in October 1919.
Reshaping a city for administrative purposes and urban requirements, in line with its needs, while keeping utmost regard for heritage preservation, should speak volumes about the city’s glorious legacy. I request the Government of Meghalaya to review its decision.
Yours etc.,
Arun Kumar Baksi,
Kolkata
