Over Rs 28 lakh spent on panel; no responsibility fixed for lapses in MeECL

Report of independent inquiry committee in public domain after 3 years & 8 months

Shillong, Nov 16: The independent inquiry committee on MeECL affairs did not fix responsibility for the various lapses but only gave suggestions for improvement.

This, despite the government spending over Rs 28 lakh on the committee.

After 3 years and 8 months, the government made public the report on November 10.

Though the committee probed the allegations of corruption in MeECL in terms of Saubhagya and smart meters, the findings were mostly recommendations to improve the power scenario.

The committee was formed in 2021 during the tenure of James Sangma as the power minister.

According to official documents, Rs 28,58,590 was spent on the committee headed by retired judge RN Mishra.

The other two experts were retired IAS official Manoj Kumar(Administrative Member) and retired rural electrification company executive director Sunil Kumar.

Out of Rs 28,58,590, Rs 10,08,705 and Rs 17,49,885 were sanctioned for payment of honorarium/sitting fees of the chairman and the members of the committee. Rs 1 lakh was for setting up the office of the inquiry committee.

The payment was for the period from July 2021 to October 2021 and from November 2021 to March 2022.

28 meetings were held in New Delhi, and only two meetings were held in Shillong.

Mishra submitted the report to the chief minister, Conrad Sangma, in New Delhi in March 2022 (in picture).
