Shillong,Nov 22: The Dorbar Shnong Mukroh Pyllun wanted the Centre to expedite the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)’s probe into the Assam police firing incident that killed five villagers from.Meghalaya and security guard from Assam, on November 22, 2022.
In a statement, the Dorbar Shnong said,
the incident occurred due to the long-standing boundary dispute between Assam and Meghalaya, with Assam allegedly intruding into Meghalaya’s territory along Mukroh Village.
“We urge upon the Government of India to kindly intervene for resolving the long pending boundary dispute between Assam and Meghalaya and also to direct the State of Assam to stop any intrusion to State of Meghalaya along Mukroh till the final settlement of the boundary of the two States,” it said.
The Dorbar Shnong expressed disappointment that despite the incident, the CBI investigation has not made progress, adding to the pain of the affected families.
“We hope that the Government of India will listen to our humble plea and deliver us justice and will not compel us to stray away from the path of righteousness,” it said.
HYC concerned
The Hynniewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) has demanded the state governments of Meghalaya and Assam to initiate an independent probe into the 2022-Mukroh firing incident
In a statement issued on Saturday, HYC President Roy Kupar Synrem condemned the “mindless and inhumane act” perpetrated by the Assam forces, which resulted in the deaths and exacerbated tensions along the Assam-Meghalaya border.
Six persons were killed in a firing by the Assam police and forest guards at Mukroh village in West Jaintia Hills on November 22, 2022
“On the somber occasion of the third anniversary of the brutal killing of innocent civilians at Mukroh village..we unequivocally condemn…and we reiterate our demand that the state governments of Meghalaya and Assam initiate actions for a transparent, independent investigation into the incident and make the findings public without further delay.” Synrem said.
The HYC has urged the governments to prosecute those responsible for the killings and work towards a peaceful resolution of inter-state boundary disputes to prevent such tragedies in the future.
The organisation expressed disappointment that despite the agreement to request an independent judicial inquiry involving the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the investigation has not yielded satisfactory results, even after three years.
“We call upon the government of Meghalaya to take immediate steps to ensure that the investigation is completed and that the perpetrators of the crime are prosecuted as soon as possible,” Synrem said.
- The HYC reiterated its solidarity with the people of Mukroh.
