Shillong, August 14: A medical practitioner in West Garo Hills has been arrested for performing abortion illegally on a minor.
Dr Dolan SR Marak, a resident of Reservegittim in Tura, was arrested in Williamnagar by South Garo Hills police on Friday based on a complaint lodged by the victim at Baghmara Women Police Station. He was booked under the POCSO Act.
The girl’s brother-in-law and another person forcefully took her to the doctor’s clinic on August 11 to terminate the foetus. The girl suffered physical unease, including stomach cramps and bleeding. Later, she was admitted in a hospital.
During investigation, police found that Marak was involved in several illegal abortions of minor girls. He neither verified their age nor checked identification documents. Though he was aware that the patients were minor, he did not inform authorities concerned.
The brother-in-law was arrested a day before.
