Shillong, Feb 25: VPP MLA Ardent Basaiawmoit on Wednesday suggested the need for an increase in reservation for the Khasi-Jaintia community by 7%.
Raising a short-duration discussion on the report of the expert committee on reservation policy, Ardent said, “Let there be 47% reservation for Khasi-Jaintia and maintain 40% for the Garo brothers and sisters”.

Echoing the same views, Adelbert Nongrum said there is a need to change the state reservation policy, while the report is for maintaining the status quo.
However, taking a different view on the matter, the Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma hinted at the status quo by stating that the House should appreciate the wisdom of the founding fathers of the state, respecting the spirit of the Constitution.
“We should not disturb the unity and brotherhood of the people of the state”, he said.
While appreciating the stand of the VPP member Ardent Basaiawmoit, Mukul urged the House to maintain unity.
