VPP against CM distributing pattas in Garo Hills

Shillong, March 6: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has criticised Chief Minister Conrad Sangma for issuing land pattas in Danakgre Akhing, West Garo Hills, while the matter is pending before the High Court.
Earlier the Nokma filed an FIR against the chief ninister and others for disbursing pattas.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, VPP spokesperson AW Rani said the distribution of pattas on February 11 by the Chief Minister and the deputy commissioner violates the traditional system of land holding of the Garos and shows two contempts — of court and of custom.
“Land here is not just an economic asset; it is part of our identity,” Rani said.
“The matter is sub‑judice. Instead of respecting judicial examination, he went ahead. That is an abuse of power.”
The VPP pointed out that the FIR and court case raise questions over how the government acquired the land, whether compensation was paid, and whether Nokmaship heads were consulted under Sixth Schedule provisions.
He called the move a political gesture ahead of GHADC elections and hinted at possible corruption.
VPP said the party would work with locals to unravel the facts.
