Shillong, March 24: The state government will write to the KHADC & the JHADC to amend rule 8 like the GHADC to restrict non-tribals from contesting polls in councils.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of District Council Affairs department Prestone Tynsong said that the other two councils should also follow what the GHADC has done to ensure that only ST candidates contest the council polls.
As far as GHADC is concerned, the Governor notified the rules related to ST candidates.
The electoral rolls of GHADC will be prepared as the next step, Tynsong added.
Earlier, the Federation of Khasi Jaiñtia and Garo People (FKJGP), while welcoming the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council’s decision to bar non-tribals from contesting council elections, wanted the KHADC and the JHADC to adopt similar measures.
