Sonam very much aware why she was arrested: SP

Shillong, May 18: The accused in the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case, Sonam Raghuvanshi, was very much aware as to why she was arrested, a police official said.

In response to the lower court granting bail to the accused due to a clerical error in police documents, East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem told reporters on Monday ( May 18) that Sonam was informed of the murder charge during remand proceedings in both Ghazipur and Shillong.
“She was produced in Ghazipur before a magistrate there, and we got transit remand from there based on the section on murder,” Syiem said.

During production before the court, the accused understood that she was arrested for murder, the SP said.

The accused was given bail on the ground that due to a clerical error, the section number was changed from 103 to 403, Syiem said, adding that there is no section 403 in the BNS.

He disagreed with the court’s bail order that the grounds of arrest were not explained to the accused.

It is not that the grounds of arrest were not known to the accused, he asserted.

The government has already appealed before High Court against the bail order.

According to Syiem, the development will not weaken the prosecution’s case.

“Investigation is complete, and the trial remains on track. It does not mean that there will be any difference in the trial and the chargesheet is there. We have enough evidence against the accused. Bail does not in any way dilute the outcome of the trial”, he added.
