Shillong, July 27: Cabinet has approved the Meghalaya Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2026 towards promoting clean and sustainable mobility in the state.
Speaking to reporters after the cabinet neeting, the goverment spokesperson and cabinet minister Marcuise Marak said to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles, the government will provide an incentive of Rs 25,000 to every individual purchasing an EV, along with a complete waiver of vehicle registration fees. This policy reflects our commitment to building a greener Meghalaya by reducing emissions, encouraging clean transportation, and making electric mobility more accessible and affordable for our citizens.
Extension of service
The cabinet has approved the extension of the tenure of Chief Technical Advisor (Generation) in the Power Department.
Marcuise said BM War, retired Chief Engineer (Civil) of Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL), will continue to serve in the post.
“The Cabinet has approved the extension for BM War, retired Chief Engineer (Civil), MeECL, to continue as the Chief Technical Adviser (Generation) in the Power Department,” Marak said.
Power line in New Shillong
The cabinet approved Rs 22.7 crore for land compensation required for the construction of a 6.5 km, 132 KV transmission line at Mawkhanu, New Shillong Township.
Marak said the transmission line will connect the existing 220/132 KV substation to the proposed 132/33 KV, 2×50 MVA Mawkhanu substation.
Other decisions
The cabinet reconstituted New Shillong Development Agency into New Shillong Development Authority. With this change, it will now operate as an authority,” Marak said.
The cabinet also approved the creation of a Research Wing under the Meghalaya Border Areas Department.
“The Research Wing has been approved. The department will now frame the necessary service rules and initiate all required formalities,” the Minister said.
The cabinet approved an amendment to the Meghalaya Goods and Services Tax Act by way of an ordinance.
“This is in line with decisions taken by the GST Council, Government of India. Any resolution passed by the GST Council has to be adopted by the state Cabinet. We have approved it as per GST Council guidelines,” he said
