
Shillong, Aug 17: An accidental fire in a lodge in West Bengal killed 8 persons, including 5 from South Garo Hills.
Six from the district were rescued.
According to a state government statement, the incident took place around 4.30 am at Bideshini Lodge,Tarapith near Tarapith temple, Rampurhaat, Birbhum District of West Bengal.
The state government has rushed in two officers to the site to assess the situation and provide help.
While five deceased were from Meghalaya, three were from Alipurduar in West Bengal.
The South Garo Hills victims have been identified as Rajendra Nath, his wife Asha Nath their 8-year-old son Aushath, Buran Madak and his 10-year–old son Shivraj Madak. Buran’s wife was rescued. .
Others who were rescued from South Garo Hills include Ganesh Dey his wife. Jharna Dey, Chandrika Naha, her husband Dolon Naha, and their daughter Jitipriya Naha.
