Shillong, Aug 18: UDP leader and opposition leader Titosstarwell Chyne on Tuesday called on the state government to expedite the long-pending proposal to declare the Umtyngar to Shella road as a State Highway.
Chyne said the demand was first raised during the tenure of late Dr Donkupar Roy but is yet to be fulfilled.
“This is the aspiration of the people of that area. We want the government to speed up,” he said.
He said that the road should meet highway standards to benefit both locals and tourists, not just VIP traffic to Sohra.
“Every VIP who visits our state goes to Sohra. But we should not think only for that. We must think for the tourists and the people,” Chyne said.
He said upgrading the road would also cut travel time. “It will reduce congestion and the length of the route, and help people reach Sohra 10 to 15 minutes faster,” he said.
“My appeal to the government is to speed up the proposal so that Ssate highway status for this road is granted at the earliest,” he said.
